Long Beach Teacher Named Mississippi Teacher Of Year

Bethany Spayde teaches Advanced Calculus and Algebra at Long Beach High School. She's been with the school since 1995.

Spayde won the math teacher award for organizing the "Reality Fair" last year. The fair exposed students to how math is used in everyday life. They were given a salary and had to learn how to budget their expenses, from buying a car to renting a house.

Spayde says she works on extra curricular activities in math that help provide students with real life experiences to help them relate to math.  She says if the students don't have anything that links math to how they're going to use it again, they don't really necessarily want to learn it.

For winning the Math Teacher of the Year honor, Spayde received $100 and a plaque. The award was given by the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
