Scranton's Owner Named SBA's Small Business Person Of The Year

Mississippi's outstanding small business owners were recognized Tuesday for their hard work and commitment. The Mississippi district of the Small Business Administration held an awards luncheon in Biloxi.

This year's Small Business Person of the Year is Richard Chenoweth, owner of Scranton's Restaurant in Pascagoula.

The owners of Apex Laundry in Gulfport, Rita and Jeff Buck, were the winners of the SBA's newest honor - the Perseverance Award.

The winners say since Katrina, labor shortages and insurance hikes have tested the perseverance of small business owners.

"It's hell. It's been very topsy turvy the past two years. The only reason we've made it this far is based on the past 23 years experience that we had. If we hadn't had that it would be very, very tough," Chenoweth said.

"There were dark, dark days in the past. You'd wonder where your next dollar was coming from. Receiving orders were late, that sort of thing. Just find a way to make it work, if you've got a good idea to make a product, push," Jeffrey Buck said.

Other locals recognized were Waveland Mayor Tommy Longo for outstanding contributions of a public official and John Cambell of Pass Christian as an outstanding volunteer.
