MDOT Workers Say Trees May Have Saved Driver's Life

A van traveling east on Highway 90 mowed down one of the new palm trees in the median, planted by the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

According to MDOT workers on the scene in Gulfport, the driver of the van told them he blacked out because of a medical condition while driving east on the highway. The van then veered into the median, knocked down one palm tree and became embedded between two others.

MDOT workers say the palm trees might have saved the driver's life, and that of others traveling in the area, because the trees stopped the van from crossing over into westbound traffic. The driver of the van walked away without injuries.
