A Pass Christian woman is dead and her daughter in the hospital with serious injuries, following a car accident Friday afternoon.
It happened just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Firetower Road and Lobuoy Road, just north of I-ten, near the Menge Avenue exit.
Truckers looked on in shock and disbelief, having been just seconds behind the fatal crash. A garbage truck, pick up truck and Toyota Camry were all involved in the accident.
"The trash truck and the little pick up truck, collided basically head on. And then they kind of separated. The Camry came to a stop. The Camry received some damage, minor damage, and that driver was very lucky that she was not involved in the tragedy," said Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove.
The accident claimed the life of 44-year-old Sharon Perez, a Pass Christian resident. Hargrove says Perez and her 12-year-old daughter were traveling southbound in the pick up truck on Hightower Road when the pick up truck collided with the northbound garbage truck.
"It looks like the pick up truck went into the lane of the trash truck, and the trash truck had no place to go because all the impact is on the driver's side of the trash truck, and the heavy damage is on the driver's side of the pick up truck," Hargrove said.
The driver of the garbage truck and Camry were not injured.
Police rerouted traffic on Firetower Road for about two hours as investigators worked the scene. The 12-year-old girl was airlifted to Singing River Hospital, then later transferred to the Children's Hospital in Mobile for treatment.
As of Friday night, she remained in critical condition.
Hargrove says Perez died from head and chest injuries.
