Developers File Suit Against The City Of Gulfport

The battle to bring affordable housing to Gulfport is moving to court.

Wednesday, the developers working with the Region Eight Housing Authority filed a lawsuit against the city for turning down their applications to build.

The suit is an official appeal of the city council's decision to deny applications for the developers of Sandstone Villas and Hillside Terrace.

The city's planning commission and then the city council cited traffic and drainage concerns for the denials. But Region Eight's Jesse Billups says the developers are ready to address those concerns.

"I just don't know why the city took a harsh stand and refused to compromise. Refused to address any of the concerns that we had about allowing to go forward. It wasn't something that we relished on, and again we expanded many hours and many meetings in an effort to avoid doing so," Billups told WLOX News.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, neither Mayor Brent Warr nor city attorney Harry Hewes had seen the lawsuit, so the city had no comment.
