Gulfport Road Races Won't Happen In 2007

The idea of a road race in downtown Gulfport is dead, at least for this year.

You may recall city officials were discussing the possibility of the Indy Racing League holding a race near Jones Park. Race promoters said such an event could pump $50 million into Gulfport's economy.

The mayor's office says the proposed racing event remains a possibility for the future, but it won't happen this year.

Organizers had discussed setting up a possible race course around Jones Park, but that was never finalized.
