Fire-Damaged School Set To Reopen

Despite receiving major damage from a weekend fire, North Gulfport 7th and 8th Grade School will reopen on Wednesday as scheduled.

Crews are still trying to clean up the charred mess. The fire broke out around 8:30 Saturday morning. It damaged the main office area, including the principal and assistant principal's offices. The rest of the building received smoke damage.

School Superintendent Henry Arledge says when students and teachers return to school after the Mardi Gras break, they will have to deal with some minor inconveniences, like no phone system and intercoms. He says the district has hired extra workers to get the school ready.

A 14-year-old student of the school is accused of setting the blaze. He's charged with arson and burglary.
