Wear Your Life Jacket While Boating

This weekend thousands of South Mississippians will be out on the water enjoying the Back Bay, local rivers and our islands.

Boating is a way of life for many here in South Mississippi. However, each year, too many people die needlessly because they forgot one simple safety item - their life jacket.

The latest statistics show that in 90 percent of the boating fatalities victims were not wearing their life jacket.

Some people will say, "A life jacket is too hot," "It doesn't look cool," "I know how to swim," "Nothing is going to happen to me." But more than 700 people drown each year from recreational boating accidents across our county.

And if you are among the many boaters who stow life jackets on their boats, but don't wear them, remember this: If you face an emergency on the water there may not be time for you to grab your life jacket and put it on. Plus, if you are not wearing your life jacket, you will not be in a position to help others out in any type of emergency.

Remember this Memorial Day Weekend wearing that life vest at sea is just as essential as putting on protective sun screen. Happy boating everyone.
