There is one less choice when shopping for groceries in Gulfport. Thursday evening at 6, Albertson's Food Store locked it's doors for good.
Albertson's opened for business at Crossroads Mall in August of 1999 and employed 90 people. This is the second grocery store to close this year. Just last month Save-A-Center closed. Back in July Albertsons corporate office made a list of 165 "under-performing" stores in the U.S. that would be shut down this year. Albertsons in Gulfport was on that list.
An Albertsons spokesman says that "all 90 employees laid off in the gulfport store closing can choose to either transfer to another Albertson's store or can receive severance pay through April 6th."
If any of the Albertson's employees do choose to transfer to another store, the closest one is more than 90 miles away.
One other note, Gulfport city officials do not expect the closing to have an effect on sales tax collections.
