Back in the early 1960s, President John F. Kennedy said, "Word to the nation: Guard zealously your right to serve in the Armed Forces, for without them, there will be no other rights to guard."
This Saturday, the nation observes "Armed Forces Day." It's a day to say "thank-you" to the men and women who are on the front lines each day defending our country here at home and across the world.
Any community would be proud to have bases such as Keesler Air Force Base, our Seabee Center, Camp Shelby, the Navy Oceanography program at Stennis, the Coast Guard facility, and our National Guard. We are fortunate to have these bases and the men and women who serve our country here in South Mississippi.
Not only do the military bases pump money into the local economy, the servicemen and women contribute so much to the quality of life all of us enjoy on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
In fact, hours after Hurricane Katrina made landfall, many of our servicemen and women were out clearing roads, helping us start on the road to recovery.
In the next few days, if you see a serviceman or woman, take the time to say "thank-you" for what they do. Even better, if you happen to see a them during a lunch break, offer to buy them lunch. It's a small token for what they do for us.
WLOX-TV proudly salutes the servicemen and women here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
