Gulfport Albertson's Store To Close

Shoppers in Gulfport will soon have fewer choices when it comes to buying groceries. The Albertson's food store in the Crossroads shopping center will be closing, as of 6 o'clock this Thursday night.

A sign has been posted on the door annoucing the shutdown. We don't know the numbers of workers at the store, or the reason for the closing.

The manager would not comment, referring us to Albertson's national headquarters. A press release sent to WLOX from Albertson's said "After a thorough review, the Company determined this store does not provide shareholder value; therefore, the Company made the difficult decision to close the store." Officials there have not returned our calls regarding the press release.

Albertson's is one of the world's largest food and drug retailers, with annual revenues of approximately $37 billion. The company employees more than 230,000 employees and operates more that 2,400 retail stores in 33 states across the U.S.

This is the second major store to close in the Orange Grove area in the several weeks. Sav-A-Center closed last month.
