LSU Student Killed In I-10 Accident

A deadly accident claimed the life of a young woman Wednesday on Interstate 10.

State troopers said an 18-wheeler clipped the back of the car, causing it to burst into flames. The driver was thrown from the car.

According to the Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, 29-year-old Gabrielle Marcantel of Baton Rouge was traveling east on I-10 when she lost control of her car, crossed the median and hit a west bound 18-wheeler. Marcantel was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal accident brought traffic to a standstill for hours on the westbound side of I-10 in Gulfport. It happened around 1pm near mile marker 29.

Hargrove said Marcantel was an LSU grad student traveling to Destin for a retreat.
