Fork Delays Flights

Three flights were delayed at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport Sunday when a long-pronged metal fork was found in a shopping bag.

The assistant airport director says two people traveling together with identical shopping bags went past the checkpoint at the same time and simultaneously placed their bags on the conveyor belt to be screened. The screener saw the fork in one of the bags, but mistakenly stopped the person with the bag that did not contain the fork. By the time the screener discovered his mistake the other person had already boarded the plane.

About 100 people were pulled from the concourse while authorities searched for the bag. Metal forks and other sharp objects that were considered harmless before September 11th are prohibited in carry-on luggage and packages on commercial flights.
