25 Year Old Hattiesburg Resident Charged With Posting Threats On Internet

Authorities at Southern Miss were on high alert Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning after finding out a University student made threatening comments on the internet.

Campus officials say a faculty member was made aware of the threats and notified University Police.

UPD Chief Bob Hopkins says the threats posted on the popular website "myspace" were severe enough to warrant an arrest of the suspect, who we're told is a lifelong Hattiesburg resident.

Because the student did not live on campus, UPD notified Lamar County Sheriff's Office of the situation, and the 25-year-old white male student was picked up in Purvis around noon Wednesday.

Hopkins says,  "The suspect has been charged with posting threats to the internet, which is a felony."

We're told authorties are in the process of searching his home for weapons and the suspect is being questioned by University Investigators.   He is housed in Forrest County.
