Jackson County Woman Gets Life In Prison For Capital Murder

A Pascagoula woman was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole on Thursday.

A Jackson County jury found Shannon James guilty of killing Jennifer Ward in March of 1999. Ward's body was found in a home at Meadow Woods apartments in Pascagoula.

A medical examiner testified that Ward was beaten, stabbed and shot once. He listed the cause of death as massive blood loss. He said Ward's death was "slow and painful."

The judge issued the life sentence Thursday afternoon. James could have gotten the death penalty, but her attorneys proposed a deal to avoid that sentence. As a result, Ward will not file an appeal.
