Gulfport, Other Cities Can Not Afford To Ignore Affordable Housing

Not in my back yard. That's a familiar phase we have been hearing lately when affordable housing is discussed.

Some Gulfport leaders have gone on record opposing affordable housing in their part of the city. Now Region Eight Housing is threatening a lawsuit against Gulfport because of the perceived bias against affordable housing.

We all know affordable housing is sorely needed along the whole coast, including Gulfport. So we urge Gulfport city leaders and Region Eight Housing to sit down and discuss what will and will not be allowed in the city.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about this issue. It's time for all sides to get together and figure out where affordable housing can be built without affecting the property values of current homeowners.

All of our residents need a decent home to live in. Without affordable housing being built, Gulfport and other cities will face a much longer recovery. This is something we cannot accept.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
