Frequent Flyer Rules Change

Northwest Airlines has announced major changes in its frequent flier program. They will increase the minimum number of award miles needed to fly free but will eliminate blackout dates. Northwest is dropping the discounts it offered for passengers who chose to redeem award miles during off-peak periods. Those lower-mileage awards were available for up to nine months of the year.

The blackout dates will be dropped March First. Those dates have been mostly for travel around holidays. The award-mileage changes take effect June First. Although blackout dates are being dropped, Northwest noted that seats on flights during those periods will be limited.

The airline said it's always hard to find seats to prime destinations at times when a lot of people are traveling.
