Are Wetlands Regs Tough Enough?

Local environmentalists aren't happy with the Bush administration tonight. The White House just announced new environmental rules that make it easier for developers to get wetlands permits. The head of the Gulf Restoration Network told WLOX News the new regulations "just opened the way for developers to go in and mow down wetlands."

In the past, developers had to have the Army Corps of Engineers approve a mitigation plan. If a construction project filled in three acres of wetlands, the developer had to create three acres of new wetlands somewhere else. The new rules only require that there by no net loss of wetlands.
