Tanker Spills Cooking Oil, Shuts Down Highway 49

Thousands of pounds cooking oil caused major traffic concerns and temporarily shut down Highway 49 in Gulfport Saturday.

Police say a tanker truck carrying cooking spilled its cargo onto the street around 2 p.m. Police closed off the northbound lanes of Highway 49 between Highway 90 to Pass Road. They were concerned that the slick surface would cause accidents.

The driver of the truck said he estimates that about 6,000 pounds of grease leaked out. The fire department had to wait for sand to arrive before the clean up could begin.
