Gulfport officials will be discussing the possibility of hosting an Indy Racing League road race.
The Gulfport City Council voted 5 to 1 Tuesday in favor of the measure, agreeing on a letter of intent to discuss the possibility of holding a race with Marquis Sports marketing Firm. The races would be held in October and April in the city.
The site for the mile and a half course has not yet been determined, but there has been talk of a course that would wind through a section of Jones Park. That has sparked controversy, and a few residents spoke out against that possible course at Tuesday's city council meeting.
Some city council members say the races would pump millions of dollars in to the local economy and would help revitalize the tourism industry.
