An Army of firefighters and emergency personnel have been working night and day to contain a wildfire west of Canal Road. Officials monitored the slow burning fire from the air. Personnel from Long Beach, Gulfport, and Cuavas Volunteer Fire Department, joined foresters from the Mississippi Forestry Commission to fight the blaze.
The fire engulfed about 275 acres of forest along both sides of Canal Road. Residents of the Ladner Housing project and some others along Canal Road and 28th Street were evacuated as the fire approached, as a precaution. Cuavas Volunteer Fire Chief Bob Dean says they've been able to save all the structures the fire threatened. Gusting winds made it nearly impossible to extinguish but General Joe Spraggins, with Harrison County Civil Defense says the fire is under control and no homes are in danger.
Canal Road to Tillman and 28th Street have been closed as of Sunday afternoon.
