Hargrove: "Child Did Not Have Meningitis"

Officials now say a Harrison County child who died Thursday did not have meningitis, and is not contagious in any way.

Alexander Callender, 6, of Pass Christian died after collapsing on a school bus in Harrison County.

According to Coroner Gary Hargrove, the bus had just left Lizana Elementary and was on Cable Bridge Road when the boy suddenly collapsed. The bus driver did CPR until the EMTs arrived. The child was transferred to Garden Park, where he was pronounced dead.

According to Hargrove, rumors started that the child may have died from meningitis. But an autopsy conducted Friday morning showed Callender died from an abscess in a socket where a tooth had been removed.
