Ocean Springs To Celebrate Arbor Day By Giving Away 5,000 Trees

On March 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ocean Springs Civic Center on Highway 90, City officials and members of the Ocean Springs Garden Club will celebrate Arbor Day by giving away 5,000 sapling trees to the public.  The trees will be available until 2:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

The ceremony will begin with local youths performing and Father Farrell of St. Elizabeth Seton giving the invocation.

Mayor Connie Moran and Jean Holman of the Garden Club will announce the Memorial Trees, chosen to memorialize dedicated citizens of Ocean Springs who passed in 2006.

David Minkler, City Arborist, will also demonstrate the correct way to plant a tree when he plants a Memorial Tree for Bob Hayes at the Civic Center near the Memorial for Submarine Veterans.  He will also be available for general questions from the audience on tree planting and care.

City staff and volunteers will distribute the free trees to the public, five to each family.

"With Spring on the way, the City is working on many beautification projects," said Mayor Connie Moran.

"We encourage residents to plant a tree to both beautify and protect the environment.  We hope everyone will join us and take advantage of the trees that are available," Moran said.
