Bay St. Louis Shopping Center Will Soon Have New Occupant

Dollar General will occupy nearly 12,000-square-feet of space inside the building that once housed the old Winn-Dixie Grocery store. Construction crews are busy getting ready for the new retail arrival.

The building is expected to be finished in about a month, with Dollar General moving in within two months.

"We've lost a few businesses along the way this last couple of years, so I think it's good that we have more businesses starting to move back into the area," business owner Tom Cool said.

Cool co-owns a flower shop in the Bay Plaza. He says a big Dollar General Store in the shopping center can only be a positive thing.

"I think it will bring a lot more walk through traffic into the shopping center as well as a lot more visibility of people looking over this way," he said.

"Any thing's better than nothing, but Dollar General, obviously people shop there a lot," business owner George Wright said.

He owns a movie rental store just a few doors down from where Dollar General will set up shop. He had hoped another grocery food giant would occupy the spot, but is happy to have a new neighbor. Most other business owners and managers agree.

"Our exposure, naturally we're not right on Highway 90, so anyone pulling through the parking lot will have much better exposure because of Dollar General, and if they go to Dollar General and they're hungry afterward we're there for them," restaurant manager David Boudreaux said.

The Plaza is home to 15 businesses, and negotiations are under way to lease remaining spaces.
