Images of action, excitement, and career possibilities flash across the screen.
"This highly respected and decorated law enforcement agency which serves Mississippi's second largest city has positions available," says the voice on the 30 second television spot produced for the Gulfport Police Department.
Police Chief Allen Weatherford likes what he sees. Weatherford hired a local commercial production company to create a 30 second television ad that recently began running in markets across the southeast and the nation. He hopes to entice new recruits into the ranks of the Gulfport Police Department.
"We need to pick the best," says Weatherford. "Our citizens deserve it, so that's what we're looking for. We're looking for that big applicant pool to choose from."
In addition to the television commercials, the department is also reaching out through radio and billboards. Weatherford says he's already seeing results.
"We're all over. I think somebody told me the other day they heard a radio commercial in Jacksonville."
Recruiters are also hitting job fairs and other such job placement programs to sell new recruits on the rewards of a career protecting and serving Gulfport citizens.
"We want to prevent crime," says Weatherford. "And to do that, we're going to have to get it down to zero openings.
The department has had numerous openings since Hurricane Katrina gutted his manpower nearly a year and a half ago.
"Our goal for the department is to be at 10 openings by September 07. That's realistic and we feel like we're going to meet that and maybe be less than that at that time."
