Lawsuit Filed Against Moss Point

The family of an Escatawpa couple killed in a fire a year ago is seeking 2 million dollars from the city of Moss Point and the Moss Point Fire Department. The lawsuit was filed earlier this month by attorneys for Jesse C. Myers and Angela Myers Wilson, who claim negligence by the city and the fire department in the deaths of their parents, Vivian and Jesse Myers.

The couple died in a fire at their home on December 23rd, 2000. According to the suit, which gives only one side of the legal argument, a neighbor of the Myers family called 911 and the nearby Escatawpa Volunteer Fire Department was sent to the scene. The lawsuit contends Escatawpa firefighters found the house engulfed in flames and the intense heat from the fire prevented firefighters from entering the house until after the fire was put out.

According to the suit Moss Point firefighters arrived at the scene about 45 minutes later. Moss Point's failure to respond quickly, according to the suit, resulted in the ``needless'' death of the couple. An autopsy showed the couple died from smoke inhalation.
