Camp Victor Rebuilds Homes, Restocks Cabinets With Volunteers' Help

They've made it possible for more than 15,000 volunteers to help rebuild South Mississippi, and have one of the largest recovery warehouses on the coast. And Camp Victor in Ocean Springs isn't slowing down anytime soon.

Volunteers are putting food on the table and a roof over the heads of many families throughout Jackson County. They provide food and cleaning supplies to more than 150 families every week.

"Not everybody has construction skills, but often times they can pack groceries and do that kind of work," site director Jon Biggs says.

You'll find many young faces around this 25,000 square foot facility, especially in the supplies warehouse. But work at Camp Victor is also for the "young at heart."

"We go up through senior citizens, a lot of retired people this time of year. They want to help, and it's a little warmer than it is in Minnesota or North Dakota," Biggs says.

And at Camp Victor, volunteers' ages are as diverse as their zip codes. But they all come here with a similar mission.

"The community is recovering down here, but the need is still here. I wanted to give back and use my talents to help serve the community once again," Maryland volunteer John Ritz says.

This is his second trip to Camp Victor.

"Immediately after the storm it was one of relief - a lot of food, clothing, those immediate needs. Now it's evolving into one of recovery type," Biggs says.

Building homes helps to carry out that recovery mission. Carpet, doors, and materials galore make this room a one-stop-shop for rebuilders. Supplies to build a home or staples to stock it, Biggs says that one week at a time, Camp Victor will continue to change lives.

"It'll make a little difference, and if enough people make a little difference, we'll get a lot accomplished," Biggs says.

Camp Victor receives most of their funding from Lutheran Disaster Relief, Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response, and Christus Victor Church in Ocean Springs.

If you are a Jackson County resident in need of some help, Camp Victor's facilities are located at 1515 Government Street in Ocean Springs. Their phone number is (228) 872-5745.
