Group Shares Christmas Cheer With Seniors Through Gift Baskets

More than 100 local senior citizens were reminded that someone was thinking about them this holiday season.

"I had thought everyone had already forgotten me," Pat Wilson said. "I wasn't expecting all of you fine people to wish me a Merry Christmas."

"I'm just so surprised and so glad of it," Avolyn Murphy said. "It's just an honor to be remembered."

It might not be a sleigh and reindeers, but the Christmas spirit is delivered to every house this van visits.

"A lot of fruit here," Wilson said. "I love it. Pecan and apples, it's just what I ordered from Santa Claus."

"This is one of the best projects we do the entire year," Melani Cravers said.

This is the forth year in row the Pascagoula Senior Citizens group has delivered Christmas baskets to fellow members. Organizers know that for some, small care baskets might be their only Christmas gift.

"It makes you think how thankful you must be year round for the things you do have and the friends that you have," Cravers said.

For basket delivery guys like Shorty Hutchinson, the best part is surprising old friends and spreading some Christmas cheer.

"I get the best joy in the world," he said. "I look forward to it every year, and I'll do it as long as I can get around."

It took three days to delivery all of the baskets, but recipients say knowing people took time to make their Christmas special is the best gift of all.
