Gautier Council Fires Longtime City Clerk

Longtime Gautier City Clerk Pearl Mercer has been terminated. Mercer was fired Tuesday night by the Gautier City Council on a 4-3 vote. Mercer has been with the city since its incorporation in the mid-80s.

One of those voting against her termination was Mayor Pete Pope. He told WLOX News he was shocked by the vote and had no idea about the reason for the firing.

Mercer could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, the fate of another Gautier city employee may be decided Wednesday night. Fire Chief Mike Gray is appealing his suspension to the city's Civil Service Commission.

Gray was suspended for three days without pay last month for allowing several firefighters to build a school gazebo while they were on duty. He has not served the suspension while the case is on appeal.
