Supervisors Say Tax Rules Have Changed Since Oreck Came To Town

The president of the Harrison County Board of Supervisors wants to set the record straight.

Connie Rockco says safeguards were put in place two years ago to protect the county if a manufacturer like Oreck leaves town. However, those protections didn't exist when Oreck received a 10 year tax exemption to move to Mississippi.

"With the clawback, you have to certify that you live up to the obligations. And if you don't live up to the obligations, then you will actually lose your tax exemption," Rockco said.

Oreck announced last week that it was closing its Harrison County plant and taking its 450 jobs to Tennessee. It's leaving the Long Beach Industrial Park before its tax exemption ends.
