Huge Fire Burns Four Buildings In Downtown Poplarville

An early morning fire in Poplarville destroyed an entire city block. Two businesses, the city's chamber of commerce office, and the Masonic Lodge on Main Street went up in flames Thursday morning.

Firefighters from all over Pearl River county battled the blaze for hours before brining it under control. Fortunately, no one was injured.

A gift and antique store called The Other Side and a consignment store called The Clothes Closet were the two businesses destroyed. The Clothes Closet had been set up in its historic building for eight years.

"It's just like everything's gone there's just no words to describe it no words," consignment shop owner Rita Cooley said.

"I'm really sad to see, but I'm really sad for the business owners. They worked all their lives to get what they got and in a matter of hours, fire took it away from them. And my heart goes out to all those people," Poplarville Mayor Billy Spiers.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
