Harrison County Inmate Found Unresponsive; Dies At Hospital

An inmate recently incarcerated at the Harrison County Jail is dead.

Coroner Gary Hargrove says EMS responded to a medical emergency at the jail at 1:09 Sunday afternoon.

Hargrove identifies the inmate as 21-year-old Lee Demond Smith.

He says the EMS team found him unresponsive in his cell.

Smith was taken to the emergency room at Garden Park.

He was pronounced dead about an hour after he was found in his cell.

Smith was in the Harrison County jail for his alleged involvement earlier this month in a shooting on Esther Street in East Biloxi.

He was charged with aggravated assault.

Right now, the coroner has not released the cause of death.

An autopsy is set for tomorrow.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, The District Attorney's office and the Coroner's office are investigating.

Hargrove says, to his knowledge, the FBI is not involved.

WLOX contacted Harrison County Sheriff George Payne.

He told us they are treating the death as a medical emergency and are awaiting the coroner's report on the cause of death.
