Jury Issues Decision In Nissan Land Dispute

(Canton-AP) -- A Madison County jury ruled a landowner deserved more money than the state was offering for his farmland that's needed for the Nissan project.

The jury awarded John Smith $20,000 for his 1.6 acres. The state had offered him $9,208.

The state took Smith's land through eminent domain to build an access road to the $930 million Nissan plant now under construction.

Smith says the jury's award was too low. His attorney, James Ross, had asked the jury to award his client $45,000 per acre for the land. Both sides say they're not sure whether they would accept the jury's award or file an appeal.
