Holiday Dilemma 101: What to Take or What to Make?

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, there are a multitude of holiday gatherings with family and friends. Somewhere along the way, you are either a host for such an event or a guest that wants to help the host/hostess by brining an appetizer. The stress of what to take just may be too much. Don't stress. 

Why not try one of the dips with an assortment of breads, crackers, chips or vegetables? They are sure to please your crowd and guests will be asking you for the recipe. There is even a no-cook idea, perfect for those of you who consider being in the kitchen not your thing!

Hot Artichoke Dip

  • 2/3 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 (14-oz) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion
  • 1 tablespoon chopped pimento peppers

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.  Lightly grease a medium baking dish.  Blend together the cheese, mayonnaise and whipping cream.  Stir in the artichokes, green onions and pimentos.  Mix well, and transfer to the prepared baking dish.  Bake 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until lightly browned.  

Hot Crab Dip  

  • 2 (8-oz) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 (6-oz) cans crabmeat
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Paprika, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a medium bowl, mix the cream cheese, mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, crabmeat, lemon juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce.  Transfer to a shallow 9x13-inch baking dish.  Garnish with paprika.  Bake in a preheated oven 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.  

Sausage French Bread Dip

  • 1 (8-oz.) package sour cream
  • 1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese
  • 1 lb. bulk sausage
  • 1 small can chopped green chilies
  • 1 (12-oz.) package shredded cheese

Cook sausage and drain well.  Blend in cream cheese and sour cream.  Add sausage, chilies and 8 ounces of shredded cheese.  Hollow loaf of French or Italian bread.  Place dip in bread.  Sprinkle extra cheese on top.  Wrap in foil.  Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.  Toast the cut out bread for dipping and also serve with Fritos or Doritos. 

Marshmallow Cream Dip  

  • 1 (8-oz.) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (7-oz.) jar marshmallow creme

Using an electric mixer, blend cream cheese and marshmallow creme until mixed thoroughly. 

Tropical Fruit Dip  

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup marshmallow creme
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate

In a bowl, stir together mayonnaise, marshmallow creme, ginger, and orange juice concentrate until well blended.  Let rest for a few minutes, then stir again.
