Gulfport Police Arrest Murder Suspect

Around 2 o'clock Wednesday morning, police say they responded to a medical call on Dedeaux Road. There they found Mark Alan Henegan lying unconscious between two trailers. According to Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford, Henegan is being treated at an area hospital for unknown medical reasons.

Gulfport Police had been looking for Henegan in connection with Wednesday's beating death of 61-year-old, Delphia Fitts. Wednesday afternoon, police were called to the 2200 block of 6th Avenue where Fitts was found dead in her home. She had been beaten to death.

Police say Henegan became a suspect after neighbors reported seeing in the area asking for money.

Chief Weatherford says, "Citizen involvement. That's truly what makes a difference. Their statements. What they observed in the area. That's what made this case. That's what was able for us to identify this person and apprehend him."

Chief Weatherford says Henegan is charged with capital murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
