Gulfport Adds Three New Police Officers

Housing is one of the obstacles that's made it hard for police departments to recruit new officers. New officers won't come to the area if they can't find affordable places to live.

Gulfport has three new police recruits who just completed the state's law enforcement academy. The three officers are all coast residents. So, in this instance, finding a place to live wasn't a problem.

The new recruits came to Gulfport to help a depleted police force.

"What better time to start than here. If I don't go, then how is the crime going to get any better, when is it going to get better? They have to have people coming in to help," new officer Ryan Stachura said.

The Gulfport Police Department is still down 19 officers from where it was before the hurricane.
