Nick Rivers contributed 6 of the points that gave Arkansas State an early 8-0 lead on the way to an 85-61 victory Saturday night over Southern Mississippi. Rivers made 3-of-6 from 3-point range to finish as the scoring leader for ASU (6-1) with 24 points. Elvin Mims matched that output for Southern Mississippi (2-3). But Mims was the only player on his team to score in double digits, while three of Rivers' teammates scored more than 10 points. After ASU got its lead in the first 3:04, Southern Mississippi fought back to within 5 points at 18-13. But the Indians took control of the game with a 15-5 run that included two 3-pointers by Rivers. ASU led 46-29 at the half. The closest Southern Mississippi got in the second half was a 10-point deficit, at 46-36. Jason Jennings added 15 points for the Indians, while Odie Rivers got 13 and Tony Brown, who grabbed a game-leading nine rebounds, got 11 points. Southern Mississippi hit only 33 percent of its field-goal attempts, while ASU made 50 percent.
