Search Goes On At U.S.M.

State College Board officials are targeting March as the date for campus visits by finalists for the presidency of the University of Southern Mississippi. Members of the College Board search committee met yesterday with the campus advisory panel.

College Board committee chairwoman Virginia Shanteau Newton says the campus advisory committee will asked to narrow the pool of candidates to 20 by the middle of January. Newton says the number will be pared to eight to 12 candidates by the end of January. Newton says the board search committee will interview all eight to 12 candidates and then narrow the list to four finalists. She says the College Board is expected to make the final decision on the presidency in April.

The College Board is searching for a successor for Horace Fleming who stepped down August 31st after refusing the board's offer of a one-year contract extension. Aubrey Lucas, a former USM president, is the interim president of the school.
