I.P. Still Wants Tax Break

International Paper has asked the city of Moss Point to reconsider its cancellation of IP's tax exemption on its closed local mill. City Attorney Richie Perkins said Tuesday that state law provides two ways for tax exemptions to be canceled.

``One says it happens automatically after 12 months and another statute says if you find that they don't fit this definition, you're under a duty to terminate,'' Perkins said. Perkins said IP believes it falls under the law that provides for an automatic termination in 12 months. He said he believes the second definition applies. Perkins said he will ask the state attorney general for an interpretation.

Perkins said the city is not implying International Paper is doing anything wrong. ``Simply when they ceased manufacturing they ceased to meet the definition,'' he said.
