Landfill Expansion Approved - WLOX.com - The News for South Mississippi

OPPONENTS HAVE 30 DAYS TO APPEAL

Landfill Expansion Approved

Waste Management today received the state's okay to expand. The Department of Environmental Quality Permit Board voted to allow the landfill to grow by an additional hundred acres. That would make the total disposal area a 176 acres wide. The Pecan Grove landfill is out of space, and was on the verge of shutting down after this week if the expansion hadn't been granted.

People who live near the Harrison County landfill argued the DEQ should have looked at other options saying it's not fair for residents in the area to be subjected to more waste.

Opponents to today's decision have 30 days to file an appeal.
