Federal Officials Tour Damage As Cleanup Continues

(Madison-AP) -- Cleanup from deadly weekend storms continues today as federal officials begin assessing damage.

The early Saturday storms killed five people in Mississippi and destroyed at least 87 homes as the system moved across the South. Four each in Alabama and Arkansas were also killed.

Much of Mississippi's damage was in Madison, where a tornado killed two people. Two people also died from storm related injuries near Sledge in the Mississippi Delta. Another death was recorded in Panola County.

Gov. Ronnie Musgrove has declared a state of emergency in nine counties. The declaration covers Madison, Washington, Bolivar, Quitman, Panola, Tate, Sunflower, Humphreys and DeSoto counties.

Musgrove says he'll request federal assistance from President Bush Tuesday after the Federal Emergency Management Agency finishes its assessment.
