Long Beach Baptists Rebuilding Further North

After losing their church to Katrina, members of First Baptist Church in Long Beach are moving forward. Congregation members watched Monday as Reverend LaRue Stephens signed the papers purchasing 17 acres of land for the new church.

Members decided to rebuild on North Cleveland Avenue rather than go back to the Jeff Davis Avenue site. They say lower insurance costs, a more central location and more opportunities for expansion are just a few reasons for the move.

The congregation is also excited about being across the street from Long Beach Middle School.

"Being in this particular location will afford us a unique opportunity for after-school ministries, tutoring programs, not only for the middle school and the high school, but for children. It's going to afford us updated facilities that will be economically advantageous as far as the utilities," Rev. Stephens said.

The first phase of the new church, which will include the sanctuary and an education building, is expected to be complete in March of 2008.
