Translation Device Will Help More People Participate In Public Meetings

People who don't speak or understand English, often avoid meetings or public hearings. But a special donation by a Seattle woman, will help break down the language barrier.

Truc Nguyen raised $10,000 to buy a Simultaneous Translation device. Here's how it works. During a meeting, an interpreter speaks into a microphone, and up to 50 people in the audience can wear headsets to listen in.

Nguyen noticed the need for the equipment after spending two weeks volunteering in South Mississippi.

"Why should you go to a meeting when your language needs are not met? You're not going to understand anything, it's frustrating. So I really saw it as a glaring need at the city council meeting, at community meetings, that this was a tool that could really be tangible and useful to organizations working down here," Nguyen said.

Four different languages can be translated at the same time. The equipment was donated to the Mississippi Center for Justice on Division Street in Biloxi.
