Accident Backs Up I-10 Traffic For Miles

Traffic is flowing again on I-10 in Harrison and Hancock counties, but for nine hours that wasn't the case. Traffic was slow, or at a standstill while crews worked to clean up one huge mess near the Kiln-Delisle exit.

At around 11:30 Thursday night, a tractor trailer hauling cars caught fire. The driver told highway patrol his brakes locked, and he saw smoke. While he tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, a tire exploded and the debris flew in his face. The fire spread, and destroyed seven of the nine cars he was hauling.

At some point Friday morning, the fire re-ignited. Crews didn't clear the interstate until about 9:30am.

The driver, from Texas, was taken to Memorial for treatment. So far, no citations have been issued.
