Employment Outlook Not Good For 2002, Report Says

The employment picture being painted for this winter does not look great.

A report released Monday by the company Manpower shows that 20 percent of Gulfport employers plan to decrease the size of their workforce during the first three months of 2002. That number rises to 23 percent in Pascagoula.

Across the state, Meridian has the worst outlook with 33 percent of companies expecting to decrease their workforce. The state average is 21 percent.

One year ago, just 3 percent predicted cutbacks.

The report says job openings appear most likely in finance, insurance and real estate, while non-durable goods manufacturers and construction employers expect cut backs.
