Chemical Leak Closes Part Of Highway 63

A two block area on Highway 63 was closed Tuesday evening because of a chemical leak.

According to a Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality spokesman, hydrochloric acid was leaking from a tanker truck parked behind McDonalds on Hwy 63. The cleanup was expected to take a few hours.

Hydrochloric acid is used in chemical processing. The DEQ spokesman said it is very corrosive.

The tanker was traveling from Louisiana to Alabama when it stopped in Moss Point. DEQ investigators believe the leak began when the tanker made the stop.
