FEMA Agrees To Settle With Disabled Residents

FEMA has agreed to a settlement after eleven disabled Coast residents filed a lawsuit saying the agency failed to provide them with suitable housing for their special needs. A judge will decide if the settlement is fair later this month.

FEMA denies any liability under the settlement. However, the agency has agreed to the following:

  • Publicize how it will assist disabled individuals with temporary housing
  • Hire a separate contractor to assist handicapped individuals
  • Require that 10 percent of trailers ordered comply with Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards
