Gulfport Looking For Funds To Pay For Hwy 90 Street Lights

Gulfport has its beautification crews sprucing up Highway 90 medians. It's next project is replacing the nearly 200 street lights along the highway that Katrina blew over. But that may take some time.

According to Mayor Brent Warr, the city is looking at an almost $3 million bill to replace the lights.

Yesterday, Warr met with state and federal highway officials. He wanted to find out how difficult it would be to get them to cover most of the replacement cost.

"FEMA won't pay if the Federal Highway Administration pays, and vice versa. So we're trying to do the best job we can as far as putting up a good looking light as quickly as possible. We have some found, located, and we do have organizations and contractors that are ready to put them up as soon as we can get the green light on the money," Warr said.

Because of the money situation, Mayor Warr doesn't expect the Highway 90 street lights to be replaced until late this year.
