PERMIT PROCESS COULD TAKE TWO YEARS

Bay St. Louis Casino Closer To Reality

A casino company is a step closer to putting a development along St. Louis Bay in Hancock County. Europa Cruises Corporation has an option on two acres near Interstate Ten. The property could one day become the entrance to its proposed Casino World development near the Diamondhead community.

The company will pay the Gex family ten-thousand dollars a year for the option to buy the property for 350-thousand dollars before the end of 2002, 385-thousand dollars during 2003 and 420-thousand dollars in 2004. The company must solicit investors to build a 300  million dollar to 400 million dollar themed casino resort. Before work on the property can begin, the company must develop an environmental impact statement to measure its impact on wetlands and aquatic life. The impact statement must be approved by federal regulators, which could take up to two years.

The proposed development has faced opposition from citizens groups and environmentalists who say it will damage valuable wetlands along the bay.
