Officials Warn Of Two New Phone Scams Targeting South Mississippians

Two consumer warnings about schemes to separate you from your money.

Hancock Bank sent out a notice Thursday warning customers to be leery of phone calls about the long awaited homeowner grants.

Hancock Bank officials say several customers have received calls telling them they'd been approved for a grant. The caller then asks for personal information.

Remember, grant information will come by mail and you will set up a face to face closing appointment.

The second warning deals with a phone solicitation about credit cards.

State Attorney General Jim Hood says these callers claim to be with your credit card company, and say they're calling to verify a questionable charge on your account. The caller, who already has the card number, offers a refund and asks for your credit card security code. That's the three digit number on the back of the card.

The Attorney General warns consumers not to give out your personal information over the phone.
